Taking out a policy for a family member
03/01/07 at 09:16:38

Hi,  I was wondering if anyone knew if it was legal to take out a life insurance policy on a parent without the person's permission.  I'm asking because my mother doesn't have any coverage and refuses to do it herself.   Thanks ahead of time.

I'm not 100% sure on this one, but I would imagine you would need the insured's (i.e. your mom) signature somewhere throughout the process.  If not, people could just start taking out policies on whoever they wanted. Chaos would ensue!

hi nyguy, i can tell you that most insurance carriers WILL NOT accept an application unless it has the applicant's signature on it.  however, there are some specialty companies that will allow this in rare circumstances.  for example, a situation where a husband or father refuses to meet the obligations of a divorce decree would warrant such action. hope this helps

It will be virtually impossible for you to do this without your mother's permission ... legally anyway. She will most likely have to take a paramedical exam for the insurance company and sign all the forms. Kinda hard to do if she's unwilling.

It sounds like you have some alternative motives here. Are you by chance trying to get rich because you know your parent is going to kick the bucket soon? Sorry to tell you sonny that insurance doesn't work that way.

Although there are guaranteed acceptance life insurance policies that do not require a physical exam (usually for people ages 45-75), you may need to have the insured person's signature for the life insurance application. In addition, you would need their medical history in order to accurately answer any health questions on the application, and the family medical history.
