Hi Harmony! Estate planning has to do with how your financial situation and assets/liabilities will be handled when you die. You should get a will in place or a trust. You have to see a professional for this but I would definitely get started. Don't leave a mess for your family if you die. Yes, you should be doing this. I am no pro but at least I have a will. I am trying to get better insurance.

What kind of professional would someone have to see for Estate Planning and is it expensive? I am thinking about doing this myself.

You will have to see a lawyer, one who specializes in estate planning. There are bound to be hundreds of them in your area, just look in the phone book or on google.

Thanks Harley Hog. I am on a pretty tight budget right now, but I am still going to look into this. It's important for me and my family.

In an estate planning exercise assets are usually transferred from the estate owner's personal estate to a trust with the object of accumulating future asset growth in the trust instead of in the name of the owner.
More often than not the transfer to the trust is financed by way of an interest-free loan. The object is to peg the value in the owner's estate for estate duty purposes. To levy a market-related interest rate on the outstanding loan would defeat the purpose of transferring all growth assets to the trust because this would give rise to growth in the value of the loan.

I do not think I need to provide a vast definition for estate planing. Estate planning is a process. It involves people, your assets and the various forms of ownership and title that those assets may take. It addresses your future needs in case you ever become unable to care for yourself. Many people mistakenly think that estate planning only involves the writing of a will. Estate planning, however, can also involve financial, tax, medical and business planning. Therefore keeping a tab on the market can be a very prudent decisions by means of personal finance of newsletters or researching regularly online can be very useful.
