I am wondering if anyone knows how the insurance companies are regulated? Do they have to keep our information confidential? I have sensitive information that I don't want to get out.

Of course insurance companies have to keep your information private. They have a lot of liability issues to face when it comes to giving out anyone's personal info. You can rest assured that your SSN and driver's license number won't get out to the public if you provide it on an application for life insurance. The company can be charged with legal suits if they do release that info. And, because of HIPAA laws, you know that your privacy is protected in terms of your medical records. It's hard to trust any huge corporation when you're just another number to them, but because of legislation and laws, the insurance companies are highly regulated on privacy matters.

I would have to agree with piggleyt as well. Insurance companies are regulated by the state insurance commissioner and have to abide by all the privacy laws when dealing with customer's information. If you are concerned about your privacy or want to make sure that a certain agent is licensed in your state, you can look up your state's department of insurance website. For example, California's is http://www.insurance.ca.gov/ and it is a good resource for insurance information from car insurance to life insurance. Also it lets you look up agents in your area. It even lists the insurance codes that insurance brokers and companies must follow. It's a lot of information, but you are bound to find answers to privacy questions and concerns on the state's department of insurance website.
