Counselors

I went to see a marriage counselor and we got into some pretty detailed discussions about my past, things that will not be in my medical records. I don't want those things to get out, so I am wondering if the insurance companies usually want to see records from counselors?

Usually insurance companies will want to see counselor records only if there is a sign of mental illness or a disorder that might directly impact your health. I have never heard of an insurance company obtaining records from a marriage counselor before, but if it has something to do with your physical or mental state, then they might be interested in that information. You might want to list that you have gone to marriage counseling on your medical exam, but unless the company obtains medical records from your primary doctor and your doctor specifically lists the counseling in a way that it has had an affect on your health condition, I don't think that the insurance company will try to get those records. Also, if they ask for them and you don't feel comfortable giving them out, then you can cancel your application and try with a different company that isn't so concerned about it.

Insurance companies will inquire medical records from your physician any time you apply for a life insurance policy, however on policies lover 100,000 medical exam such as blood test and urine is required. These regulations may vary from company to company would recommend consulting your financial advisor. Under 100k you can get underwritten without any medical exam.

Yes, I agree that most policies for $100,000 of coverage, or less, are usually written without requiring a medical exam. However, that depends on the insurer, their underwriting guidelines, your age and health, etc.

There are other policies available that may offer you up to $500,000 of term life insurance without any medical exams. These policies are know as quick-issue, or simplified issue life insurance policies. You usually answer a few health questions, and the insurer let's you know the same day if you qualify and can begin your coverage.

However, these policies are not for everyone. The rates tend to be higher. And, the coverage is usually limited to $500,000 or less. You can learn more by reviewing this article on Life insurance no medical exam coverage.

Well I just don't want the insurance company to get the wrong idea about my health, because my counselor is not a physician. This is just some person I talk to, they are not even able to prescribe any medication. The only treatment they give are ideas on how to improve my life and forgive past issues. I don't want the insurance company to pull key words out of my counseling notes and pin me with having depression or anxiety or something when I have never been diagnosed. Can insurance companies go after records like this, if they are not even from a doctor or physician?

I would say if the counselor is not a licensed medical professional, then no. If you have no medical or mental health conditions then you do not need to disclose your counseling sessions on your application, unless it specifically asks about that which I doubt. Each company is probably different though.

Just get a copy of the company's application and look at the exact wording of their questions. You are just required to answer the questions as they are on the application. Some companies may not ask about counselors.
