In force policies

I have a life insurance policy with American General Life Insurance Company in which I got through a broker. When it comes to changing beneficiaries or updating my mailing address, do I need to contact the agent or the insurance company directly?

Once your policy is in force, you work with the insurance company directly for all your policy needs and changes. You can set up an account through the internet with AIG. It's called American General's E-Service. You just register yourself as a new user. It'll ask you for your policy number, SSN, name, and DOB. Here is the link for the registration
https://login.aigag.com/eservice/index.jsp?segment=NewUser. You can also call AIG's customer service number, which is 1-800-231-3655. Your agent can still be of some assistance to you if you would rather go through them. Most times they can call the insurance company for you for any forms that might be needed once the policy is in force. Most people just rather deal with the insurance company to ensure they get everything correct themselves. Best regards.  Smiley

No, your policy doesn't automatically go in force when you submit money with an application, but it can offer you temporary coverage for the underwriting process. Your policy won't go into force until you are approved by the underwriter. Getting temporary coverage is important if you don't already have life insurance. Otherwise, you can just pay once you are issued the policy. You would also have to qualify for the temporary coverage by answering a couple health questions. I think your face amount has to be under 1 million too for most insurance companies to offer temporary coverage.
