Liability insurance
02/04/08 at 12:16:07

My friend is getting married soon and the ceremony location has informed her that she needs to get liability insurance of $300,000 for the site before they can allow the event. She doesn't have home owner's insurance because she rents her apartment and is having trouble obtaining liability insurance for a reasonable price. What should she do?

I had the same problem with my wedding location. I had to go into my auto insurance's office to review my auto and renter's insurance and the agent mentioned that they also offer liability insurance for one day events. It was so easy. I just brought in my paperwork about the site and the agent took care of it and gave me two copies so that I could provide the location with evidence of insurance. It only cost me $30! Have her contact her auto insurance company and see if they offer liability. She'd be surprised  how cheap and easy it will be that way.

What is liability insurance for anyways? Shouldn't ceremony and reception sites already have insurance to cover any damages or injuries? Why should it be a guest's responsibility? They already have so much to worry about for that big day.

Liability insurance is especially important to event sites during weddings because usually alcohol is served at those kinds of gatherings. People can get a little crazy when liquor is involved, causing some property damage or injuries to themselves and others. Sites require this as precaution for their property and the bride and groom. They want everything to go well but the insurance is a must to protect themselves. Also, with different vendors coming in and out with flowers, cakes, china, etc. something can fall and get damaged. The vendors usually have their own liability coverage, but the bride and groom aren't covered by it and could become liable for any damages or accidents.

Wow, that is very interesting. I can see why this type of insurance would be important since weddings are very expensive.
