ROP policy as investment
03/07/08 at 11:46:53

Since I have to pay more for my term life insurance policy anyway (I travel to India) I was thinking I should use the ROP rider so that at least I get my money back in the end. Has anyone purchased one of these ROP policies, and how easy was it to get all your money back at the end?

As long as you pay your premiums on time and don't cash out the policy before the term is up, then you shouldn't have any problems getting your money back. The insurance company is obligated to enforcing this payback to the client when the term is up. This doesn't mean that you'll just get a check in the mail one day after your term is finished. You might want to call prior to the term ending to make sure that everything is taken care of.

Yes, you may get your premiums back after the policy expires. but the insurer may keep a certain percentage of the premiums as charges or fees related to the handling of the policy. But, you should get a large portion of the premiums back if you outlive your term life policy.

Consider inflation if you are thinking about an ROP policy. You may make more money if you get regular term and invest extra money yourself.

If you are considering ROP, why not also consider a Universal policy. If you intend to pay more anyway, this way you could be covered until you are 100 and build a cash value.

ROP is not likely to be a target. It is mostly a pricing gimmick based upon the 'magic' of compound interest. (I priced ROP for a life company many years ago.) People don't generally gain enough on ROP to make the IRS very concerned.

Great question and responses on this topic! You may want to check out our ROP term life insurance calculator. It is a great tool for determining the rate of return on a ROP term life insurance policy, as well as the return you would have to earn by purchasing regular term life insurance and investing the premium difference yourself. Give it a try ... it's pretty cool!
