Even Custer Had Life Insurance
08/21/2006
Life Insurance
By: Tim Bain

A bit of life insurance trivia for you today. Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer (yes, he of 'Custer's Last Stand' fame) must have sensed his last stand may be just around the corner. Custer purchased a $5,000 life insurance policy from New York Life Insurance Company on June 4, 1874, slightly more than two years before he died at the hands of the Oglala Sioux war chief Crazy Horse, at the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Custer's wife was the beneficiary of the policy, which would be worth about $500,000 today.
