Happy Fourth of July 2007!
On behalf of the QuickQuote family, I'd like to wish everyone a happy and safe holiday. It's forecasted to be a hot 105 degrees here in Reno.
In case you are hosting a get together to celebrate the holiday, the following summer safety tips come from The Atlantic Companies (providers of homeowners insurance), the Red Cross and other organizations:
- Make sure all children are supervised in or around swimming pools, ponds, rivers, etc. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an estimated 260 children under the age of five drown each year in residential swimming pools. Another 3,000 or so survive, with many suffering permanent brain damage.
- Wash your hands before handling food and be careful not to cross-contaminate foods during preparation.
- Cook all food to the proper temperature. Invest in a food thermometer.
- Keep perishable foods out of the intense summer heat.
- Keep small children and pets away from barbeques, grills, smokers, fire pits, etc.
- Do not serve guests alcohol starting 90 minutes before the party ends.
- Make designated drivers or other transportation available.
- Do not serve alcohol to minors.
- Fireworks should be used with extreme caution. Young children should never be permitted to handle fireworks and older children should always be supervised by a responsible (and sober) adult.
- Check with local authorities for laws regarding fireworks in your area.
Not only are these safety tips important to protect your family and guests, they will help prevent unwanted accidents and liability in connection with your property (no claims = lower insurance premiums).
