Fewer Small Employers Offering Insurance Benefits

Does your small employer (defined as 100 or fewer employees) offer employee benefits? If so, consider yourself one of the lucky ones. Or consider your employer one of the gracious, thoughtful ones. Whichever you prefer.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a whopping 98% of all businesses in the U.S. have fewer than 100 employees. These small businesses account for approximately 35% of the U.S. workforce. Now that's a force to be reckoned with. And yet, only 47% of them offer benefits to their employees.

The primary reason for the lack of benefit programs offered by small businesses is the recent recession and continued weak economy, according to the research firm LIMRA. Micro businesses, those with less than ten employees, have been hit especially hard.

What Benefits do Small Businesses Offer?

So, what about the other 53% of small businesses that are ponying up for employee benefits -- what are they offering? The overwhelming favorite benefit offered is health insurance, followed by prescription drug benefits. Dental insurance, life insurance and vision insurance round out the top five. As expected, the larger the company size, the larger the percentage of employers offering benefits to their employees.

  Employer Sponsored Life Insurance

25% of small businesses offer some type of group life insurance coverage to their employees. Typically, this coverage is term life insurance; although, some plans may include universal life or whole life insurance. Many programs are designed to offer a base amount to the employee -- usually a multiple of their salary or some similar amount. On top of the base offering, the employee can then purchase additional coverage through payroll deduction.

The cost of group life insurance coverage is typically more than you would pay for a personal policy.

This seems like an attractive benefit and many employees take advantage of these benefit programs. But like most everything, there are pros and cons to consider.

  Pros

  1. Good Health Not Required - Employees can typically buy life insurance coverage up to a certain amount without having to prove good health or take a paramedical exam. This is a big advantage for people with serious medical conditions or a family history of the same.

  2. Convenience - Employees can pay for their coverage through automatic payroll deductions without ever seeing the money.

  Cons

  1. Cost - The cost of group life insurance coverage is typically more than you would pay for a personal policy. The reason? See #1 above. You know that guy a few cubicles down who's always out sick and helps himself to a smoke break every 20 minutes? He's responsible for driving the cost of the plan up for everyone.

  2. It's Not Really Yours - It's nice of your employer to offer you a group life insurance plan. But what happens after the next round of budget cuts? Will your plan survive? If not, you could be looking for a new policy.

  3. You Can't Take it With You - Well, most of the time this is the case. Depending on the plan, you may be able to convert the plan to a personal policy. But the cost is almost always prohibitive (once again, a big shout-out to the chain-smoking guy down the hall for that). So if you find yourself suddenly out of a job, you will most likely have to scramble for life insurance coverage.

Something You Can Take With You

This sage advice ... and a comic!

Your individual circumstances will always dictate what employer benefits you should take advantage of. Just be sure you know what strings may be attached. And always have a Plan B ready in case your employer suddenly joins the growing number of small businesses cutting ties with their employee benefit plans.

A new report by the Medical Information Bureau (MIB) shows that individual applications for coverage increased 1.4 percent in 2012. The MIB Life Index is commonly used to determine life insurance application activity in the U.S. It is based on the number of MIB checks life insurance companies perform when underwriting new applications for coverage.

Simply put, it provides the 'best bang for your buck' as I always say. Actually, I hardly ever say that. In fact, I can't remember the last time I said it. But I definitely agree with it!

What Happens if I Don't Pay My Term Life Insurance Premium?

Term life insurance is a unilateral agreement between you and the life insurance company. A unilateral agreement or contract is on in which the obligation rests on only one party. In this case that party is the life insurance company.

A term life insurance policy is similar to an auto insurance policy, in that in order to maintain coverage you must continue to pay the premiums when due. If you do not, the policy will simply lapse and you will not be covered.

We often have customers ask if letting a term life insurance policy lapse this will hurt their credit. The answer is -- NO! As this is a unilateral agreement, there is no obligation on your part to pay the premiums. Unlike a bank loan or credit card, missed payments are not reported to consumer reporting agencies or credit bureaus by the life insurance company.

So now you know if you don't pay your premium your policy will lapse. But what if you accidentally miss the payment date or can't make the premium payment on time for some reason? Well -- there's no need to panic. You have some options.

  Behold The Grace Period

All term life insurance policies allow some sort of grace period for making your premium payment. The most common length is 30 days. Your policy will not lapse as long as the life insurance company receives and applies your payment within the grace period. Keep in mind each company has its own guidelines and you should refer to your policy to verify the grace period and specific rules.

One important point to note -- you are still covered during the grace period. If you die, the company will still pay the death benefit.

Reinstatement -- Sometimes It's Better to Ask for Forgiveness

If you do happen to go past the grace period without paying your premium the policy will lapse. So what then? Well, if you decide you still want the coverage you can apply for reinstatement. Once again, each company has its own guidelines for reinstatement. Most will allow you to apply for reinstatement up to five years from the end of the grace period. Here's what is usually required.

Reinstatement Application - All companies will ask for you to complete this. It is similar to the original application you completed when you first applied for the policy.

Health Statement - Most companies will ask questions regarding your current health status. They want to see if anything has changed since your original application.

New Paramedical Exam - This varies widely by the life insurance company. Most do not require this if your reinstatement application is received within 90 days of the end of the grace period. Others will give you up to a full year before they will require a new exam.

However, if you have had a change in health status or provide answers on the health statement that suggest health changes, the life insurance company will most likely require you to complete a new paramed exam, regardless of the time passes since the end of the grace period.

If you are approved for a reinstatement, you will be required to pay the premiums due from the end of the grace period. And that can be a significant amount if it has been several months or even years since your policy lapsed. For that reason, applying for a new policy altogether may be a better choice.

  Cancel the Policy Entirely

You may ultimately decide you don't want your term life insurance policy anymore. Maybe you bought a less expensive policy recently and just want to cancel your old one. Or maybe you simply no longer need the coverage. Either way, you have a couple of options for terminating the policy.

Stop Paying - You can simply stop paying the premiums and the policy will lapse, as we've already discussed. However, if you pay your premiums annually or even semi-annually, you may be leaving some money on the table. Which leads us to the second option ...

Formally Cancel - Call the life insurance company and tell them you want to cancel the policy. Give them a specific date and ask them to refund any 'unused' premiums you have already paid. Most companies will oblige and give you back a prorated share of the premiums. So, if you are three months into an annual payment of $1,200, you would be able to recover $900 in unused premiums!

The most important thing you can do if you find yourself falling behind on premium payments or unsure about continuing your coverage is to contact your agent or the life insurance company. Ask about your options so you can make an informed decision. One that will ensure your loved ones remain protected!

Fidelity Life Airs New Term Life Insurance Commercial

It's not every day we see a new commercial for term life insurance on television. And it's even more unlikely we'll see one during prime time, on network television no less. But that's exactly what happened yesterday during the AFC Championship Game between the Baltimore Ravens and New England Patriots on CBS.

Fidelity Life Association ran a new advertisement for term life insurance during the game (one of about 500 total commercials shown during the 3 hour telecast). The ad talks about how busy people are in their daily lives thinking about what's important to them: their family, the mortgage and kid's college tuition. But not term life insurance.

Fidelity Life has been in business since 1896 and is rated A- (Excellent, 4th Highest of 15) by A.M. Best Rating Services. The company offers an array of life insurance products, with many based on a simplified issue platform, also known as non-medical. This means you do not need to complete a paramedical exam, as the company does not collect blood or urine samples from you. They also do not collect Attending Physician Statements (APS) from your doctor. This simplified issue approach is a big reason many people select Fidelity Life for there term life insurance. Take a look at the new commerical below.

So, what can Fidelity offer you? Let's take a look.

  Non-Medical Term Life Insurance

Rapid Decision Express is simplified issue term life insurance, available in amounts from $25,000 to $250,000. Since it is simplified issue, you simply complete the application by telephone with a licensed agent. The requirements are:

7-Question Application - Answers must be ‘No’ to be eligible.

Medical Information Bureau Report (MIB) - Fidelity Life will check your MIB report to see if you have history such as recently declined applications with other life insurance companies.

Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) - Fidelity will check your MVR for infractions such as DUI/DWI, multiple speeding violations, etc.

Prescription Drug Database Report (Rx) - Fidelity Life will check your Rx report to verify answers you provide on the application.

This simplified underwriting is done rather quickly and Fidelity Life usually provides a decision on applications within 24-48 hours.

  Universal Life Insurance

Rapid Decision Universal Life is simplified issue universal life. The application process is very similar to Rapid Decision Term, with no paramed exam and a simple yes/no application. Of course, being universal life, the policy itself differs significantly from term life. It comes with features such as the potential for permanent coverage, cash value accumulation and policy loans. As a result, the cost is higher than term life.

  Mortgage Term Life Insurance

Rapid Decision Mortgage Term is protection for your home mortgage. It is also simplified issue term life insurance with an 8-question application. No paramedical exam is required.

Coverage is available in amounts from $25,000 up to $500,000, depending on your age. You can apply for coverage in an amount up to 125% of your mortgage amount.

Senior Term Life & Whole Life Insurance

Fidelity Life offers Rapid Decision Senior Life Term for people ages 50-70 and Senior Whole Life for people ages 50-85. Both are available in amounts from $10,000 to $150,000. Once again, a simplified underwriting process means no paramedical exam is required. Applicants must be able to answer 'No' to all application questions.

  Accidental Death Life Insurance

Accidental Death Benefit pays a death benefit if you die as the result of an accident. This type of life insurance is a good alternative for people who cannot qualify for regular term life insurance due to past or current health conditions. Although it will not pay a benefit for natural causes of death, at least you will have coverage for accidents.

You can apply for a policy in amounts from $50,000 to $500,000. There is no paramedical exam required, nor are there any medical questions on the application. Most applications are approved within 24 hours, so you can secure coverage very quickly. This is also a good option for people who are travelling overseas and want additional accidental death coverage.

Because many of the life insurance products from Fidelity Life are simplified issue, a licensed agent will be able to provide you with quotes and check your eligibility. Let us know if you see something that interests you or if you would like to know more about Fidelity Life!

It's a modified ancient English proverb, dating back as far as 1374. If you've recently come to the end of your term life insurance policy -- congratulations! Why should you be happy about that? Because you have outlived your policy, that's why! The best type of term life insurance is the kind you never end up using, but is there if you and your family need it.

As you may know by now, term life insurance has an 'expiration date' in a sense. It lasts for a specific length of time, or term period. The term period is set when you purchase the policy and typically lasts for 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years.

  So Now What?

Well, that depends on your life insurance needs. Even though your term period has expired, your policy may still have value to you. If you find that you still need life insurance protection at this point, you do have options for extending, converting or renewing the coverage.

  Extending Your Coverage

Most term life insurance policies do not technically expire until the Insured reaches age 95. This means you can keep your existing policy in force by continuing to pay the premiums.

Pros - This option may be worthwhile if you find you need the coverage for a short period of time, say 2-3 years. Also, this may be a good choice (or your only choice) if you've reached age 70 or for health reasons you cannot qualify for a new policy.

Cons - The cost to keep the policy in force will increase - significantly. And it will continue to increase each year as you age.

  Converting Your Coverage

Nearly all term life insurance policies issued today include a conversion option, also called an exchange option. If your policy was issued more than ten years ago, be sure to check if it includes this option.

The option allows you to convert your term life policy to a permanent life policy, typically a Universal Life (UL) policy. Most companies have select UL policies available for conversion. Some companies, such as MetLife, allow conversion to any UL policy in their portfolio.

Conversions guidelines vary by life insurance company. The most common are:

Entire Term - This allows you to convert your policy at any time during the policy term (BEFORE expiration).

Period of Time - This allows you to convert your policy for a certain period of time - say, the first five years of the policy term.

Specific Age - This allows you to convert your policy up until a specific age, typically age 70.

One of the most important things to remember about conversion is you need to begin the process before your term expires. It's best to start looking at policies and costs at least a year in advance. This will help you keep your options open at the policy end draws near.

Pros - Clearly the biggest benefit of conversion is that you do not have to provide evidence of insurability to convert to a permanent policy, provided the coverage amount remains the same or less. In other words, you do not need to show good health as you did when you first bought your term life policy. That makes conversion the go-to option for people who need the continued coverage but have developed serious medical conditions or are otherwise not in good health.

Cons - Some life insurance companies limit the number of UL policies available for conversion. So you may not necessarily get the features you would like in a permanent policy or the best available policy. You may also have to pay more than you would for a non-eligible UL policy.

  Renewing Your Coverage

Perhaps the least expensive option for keeping your life insurance coverage in force is to simply apply for a new term life policy. You can either apply with the same company utilizing their Exchange or Re-Entry provision, or you can choose a different company. There are no clear advantages to staying with the same company, as for both applications you will need to take a paramed exam and show you are in good health. We always advise people to shop around for the best rate, just as you did 10, 15 or 20 years ago.

Pros - This is often the least expensive option, especially if you are under age 60 or so.

Cons - You have to prove insurability again. If your health has deteriorated, you may lose out on the cost savings or be denied coverage altogether.

Keep these options in mind as your term life insurance policy draws to a close. Consult with your life insurance advisor and together you will make an informed choice!

3 Ways to Stay Healthy This Flu Season

Flu season is in full beast mode. And to make matters worse, this season not only started early but is more widespread and severe than normal. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that as of the end of December, 41 states have experienced widespread flu activity. The same report states that there have been over 2,250 confirmed flu-related hospitalizations. And while flu-related deaths have not exceeded the epidemic threshold, there have been 18 deaths among children so far this flu season.

  Keep Your Family Safe

There are several steps you can take to help protect your family from the flu.

  1. Get a Flu Vaccination

It's not too late to get a flu shot. Flu season typically runs through the end of March, and this year it could extend beyond that. Make an appointment with your family doctor to get the whole family vaccinated. Consider a nasal spray vaccination for younger children. Although flu shots and nasal sprays are not 100 percent effective, they may still provide some protection. Two years ago, my son got the flu despite having received the nasal spray. Our pediatrician told us had he not been vaccinated, his symptoms would have been far worse and likely would have lasted much longer.

  2. Clean, Clean, and then -- Clean Some More

Start with the hands. Encourage and enforce good, consistent hand-washing in your home - and out. Use warm water and soap, or an alcohol-based cleaning solution. Remind kids they need to wash up regularly at school. This is also good advice for you and your spouse. Keep your workspace at the office clean. Be especially diligent in and around public restrooms, water coolers and other places where hand-to-object content is unavoidable. And remember to keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth as much as possible.

Next, give your home a good scrubbing. According to a 2009 story in the New York Times, flu viruses can live on inanimate objects such as counters and sinks up to two days, depending on humidity and temperature! Using a known antimicrobial product such as Lysol or Clorox bleach is an effective way to fight the flu virus. Focus on frequently touched objects such as toys, doorknobs, television remote controls and yes, even cell phones, iPods and other handheld devices. And don't forget to bring along your disinfectant wipes or spray when you're on the road. We can only imagine what lives and breathes in many hotel rooms, buses, airplanes, etc.

  3. Eat, Drink and be Merry

It's important to continue your healthy lifestyle during flu season. Check that -- it's even MORE important during flu season. Be sure you and your family are drinking plenty of fluids, preferably water. Eat healthy, nutritious foods. Winter is a good time to cut down on eating out and staying in with healthy meals anyway. Keep up your exercise routine and help the kids stay as physically active as possible. This can be difficult in colder climates, where cabin fever can easily take over. Make an extra effort to get outside for fresh air, even if for only a few minutes at a time.

Put Your Term Life Insurance Application on Hold

Despite your best efforts at following our tips, you may still come down with the flu bug. If so, your priority should be taking care of yourself and getting healthy again. And if you are in the process of applying for a new term life insurance policy, it's a good idea to put your paramed exam on hold until you're back on your feet. This is because the effects the flu has on your body can negatively influence the results of your paramed exam. And poor results often mean higher premiums. Consider these two factors.

  1. Fever

One of the earliest body responses to the flu virus is fever. Body temperature increases in an effort to fend off viral reproduction. Fever is usually accompanied by chills, headache, body aches and sometimes dehydration. Being dehydrated could cause abnormal urine test and blood test results.

  2. Medicines

The flu is usually treated with over the counter medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil) and cough suppressants. An antiviral medication such as Tamiflu may also be prescribed by a physician. These medications can alter the body's liver functions, blood pressure and heart rate. All of these are checked on the paramed test and abnormal results could mean you'll be asked to pay more for your policy.

We certainly hope you and your family make through this flu season without incident. But if you find yourself sick, take the time needed before completing your paramed exam. This may be the only time you’ll hear us advise you to wait on your term life insurance!

3 Things To Do On New Year's Day 2013!

It's that time of year again. Time to reflect and look ahead to new beginnings (yes, that saying is wearing thin on us already, too). How about we think of the New Year as the perfect time to reboot and make plans for an exciting and prosperous next 12 months? In that spirit, here are 3 things to help you get a head start on your best year ever!

  1. Cure Your Hangover

First things first. Hopefully you're not in this boat. But if you wake up tomorrow feeling like your head is sewn to the carpet, try this:

Hydrate - Dehydration is the main cause of your morning-after suffering. If it's not too late, alternate a glass of water with your alcoholic beverage of choice. This is the best way to stave off dehydration, according to the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. If you're long past that point, start drinking water or a sport drink right away. It's simply a classic case of better late than never. You need to replenish your body's fluid and electrolyte levels as quickly as possible.

Medicate - Health.com advises staying away from aspirin, which may irritate your stomach (the last thing you need right now). And Tylenol taken in conjunction with alcohol can cause liver problems. The best choice for relieving some of the headache and other pains you are feeling is ibuprofen. However, if you're feeling nauseous or even vomiting, you likely won't be able to keep the medication down. You might find some relief from Alka-Seltzer.

Eat - Eating a light meal may help your queasy stomach and get valuable nutrients flowing again. It's best to stay away from greasy breakfast foods and focus on simple, easily digested ones such as toast, cereal or even crackers. Gradually work your way toward more substantial foods once your body can tolerate them.

Caffeinate - Wait -- not so fast! If you are a regular coffee drinker, you may find some relief from a little caffeine. You may even be able to avoid a caffeine withdrawal headache. But if java is not on your daily menu, now is not the time to try it. Caffeine narrows blood vessels in the body and may make your symptoms worse.

Sleep - According to LiveScience, a hangover can last from 8 - 24 hours, depending, of course, on how much damage you did the night before. You are going to need as much rest as you can possible afford. "The human body has an amazing capacity to heal on its own," says Charles Cutler, MD, the chair of the American College of Physicians' Board of Governors.

  2. Make Your Resolutions

According to Statistic Brain, 45 percent of Americans usually make at least one New Year's resolution. If you're in that group, you'll be happy to know that people who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to reach their goals. The top traditional resolutions are:

Self-Improvement - 47%

Weight/Health Related - 38%

Money/Financial Related - 34 %

  3. Review Your Term Life Insurance Policy

A year can go by so quickly (unless you're incarcerated). What with all the vacations, holidays, parties, children's activities, date nights, business trips and the like. As we reminisce about the year gone by and ask ourselves where it went, we have a golden opportunity to remind ourselves of any major life events we experienced. Perhaps you excitedly welcomed a new child into your home, or reluctantly sent one off to college. Maybe you bought a new house, or even better yet -- built the house of your dreams. And what about your career? Did a new job take you to a new city or put you in a higher tax bracket?

An annual review of your term life insurance policy can help secure your family's financial future in the wake of these and other life changing events. And it doesn't always have to mean you will need more coverage either. Reviews can show that you no longer have the need for as much coverage as you are carrying. And if you do need the coverage you have or even more, reviewing term life insurance costs annually may result in finding a less expensive policy. Even though you've aged since your policy was issued, term life insurance rates have dropped significantly over the past several years. Let us know if you need help!

Here's to a healthy and happy New Year to you and your loved ones! We look forward to helping you protect them in 2013!

Unwanted Holiday Gifts = Cash for Term Life Insurance!

Are you the proud new owner of a holiday gift you weren't entirely thrilled to receive? Or perhaps you got a great gift that just doesn't fit quite right (darn holiday carbs!). If so, you're not alone. Retail analysts estimate 12 to 20 percent of all Christmas gifts are exchanged or returned. That's a HUGE number, considering the National Retail Federation estimates this year's holiday sales to be around $585 billion! And returns will cost retailers and estimated 10 percent of their total holiday sales.

According to a 2011 MarketTools Study, clothing and shoes are the most commonly returned holiday gifts. Here's a list of the top presents that typically don't stay around long enough to see the New Year.

Apparel - 62%

Toys and Games - 16%

Kitchen and Bath Products - 13

Cosmetic and Beauty Products - 10%

Jewelry - 10%

So, how can you painlessly swap that wonderful holiday sweater your Great Aunt just knew you would love? Here are some tips.

  1. Wait!

Don't go the day after Christmas. This is by far the busiest return day of the year. You'll spend most of it in the customer service line. It's just one reason Wal-Mart has televisions in there -- for your 'enjoyment.'

  2. A Gift Receipt is Your New Best Friend

Having one could save you time and money. In fact, some stores require them for exchanges and returns.

  3. Beware Gift Card Returns

Some stores won't accept them and others may withhold a service fee.

  4. Bring the Tags

Hopefully you didn't throw these away or completely obliterate them with a Sharpie! Stores may need these to look up the item, especially if you do not have a gift receipt.

Now that you've returned all of your unwanted gifts, why not spend your newfound riches on something useful? Of course, we're talking about term life insurance! Here's what you can expect to spend on a new policy as we head into 2013.

3 Tips For Choosing a Term Life Insurance Website

Shopping for and buying term life insurance online is so easy that -- well, it's sometimes difficult. Wait, what? You see, it's easy in that there are many websites that offer quotes and allow you to begin an application online or by telephone. A simple web search will yield dozens of decent results. And that's exactly what makes is difficult at the same time. With so many websites to choose from, it can be frustrating trying to decide where in the world to begin.

So what's a term life insurance shopper to do? Well, as we've often preached, it's important to find a company you believe you can trust. A company that will look out for your best interests. Here are three things you should look for right away:

  1. A Quality Website

Does the website have a modern look with current and updated information? Does it appear as though someone actually maintains the site? Do you feel comfortable inputting your information? If not, move on. You're sure to find something better.

  2. Visible Contact Information

No offense, but you're likely not an expert on term life insurance. You may have questions about the different types, amount of coverage or any other number of concerns. Can you easily find a toll-free telephone number to call? What about an email address? A live-chat feature is also a great indicator of the website's value. Is anyone actually there to help you?

  3. Your Contact Information

Does the website ask for this? If so, ask yourself why. Do they really need your name, telephone number and email address to give you a 'free' quote? What will they do with the information? Will they sell it? Many websites collect this information to market to you or to sell to other life insurance agents as leads. Do yourself a favor and take a pass on these websites. Find one that gives you a truly free quote, without asking for your personal information in return.

So we've written about all of these things in past blog posts. And now, we've gone a step further and put together a video so you can both 'see and hear' the difference a good, reputable term life insurance website can make.

Enjoy -- and oh, please do let us know what you think of our latest creation! After all, we made it just for you. Happy Holidays!

Outlive Your Term Life Insurance Policy: Holiday Safety

The holiday season is upon us, and in the words of singer Andy Williams, "It's the most wonderful time of the year!" But this most joyous of seasons is also host to potential dangers. Take heed of our holiday safety tips and your chances of outliving your term life insurance policy will multiply like gifts on a child's Santa list!

  The Holiday Lights

'Tis the season to channel your inner Clark Griswold. And if your exterior illumination skills aren't quite up to par with Sparky's, follow these tips to keep yourself safe and your house intact.

  1. Do all of your prep work before the bad weather hits. Before the snow starts to fall is the best time to install the hooks on your gutters and eaves, layout your extension cords and plan circuit loads. You can also dig any holes needed for yard decorations before the ground is frozen.

  2. Next, measure your light strands and inspect them for broken bulbs or blown fuses. Make all necessary repairs before you start to hang the lights. Be sure you follow the product directions when connecting strands together. Putting too many strands together can create an electrical hazard.

  3. Once your lights are ready, set up any ladders you plan to use. Ladder safety is critical, as the Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates 91,000 people are treated in emergency rooms each year from ladder accidents. Here are a few things you can do to make sure you aren't one of them:

Clean your shoes of any snow, ice, water or mud before climbing the ladder.

Climb facing the ladder.

Keep your hands free. Use a belt or pack for tools.

Only allow one person on the ladder at a time.

Make sure your ladders are in good repair. Place the ladders on solid ground avoiding any ice or snow. Clear a path if you have to. If you are using an extension ladder, you'll want to extend the ladder high enough so that you can lean it against the eaves of the house. Try to avoid leaning the ladder against the rain gutter if possible.

  The Christmas Tree

  Ahhh -- The perfect tree.

Whether you decide to go artificial, be one of those people who are (as Clark would say) 'satisfied with a scrawny, dead, overpriced tree with no special meaning' or pull yours straight from the ground, you should be aware of a few basic safety tips.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fire departments responded to an average of 230 holiday tree-related house fires per year from 2006 - 2010. While fairly uncommon, these fires tend to be more serious, with one of every 66 resulting in at least one death. Here's how you can help prevent a fire from occurring:

WATER! Crispy trees are more susceptible to fires. Check and refill water levels daily. Newly cut trees will take in more water than older ones, especially within the first few days.

Maintain your lights. Check all light strands for broken bulbs, blown fuses, worn or damaged insulation and exposed wires. Replace all damaged strands.

Keep your tree away from all external heat sources like fireplaces and space heaters. 18 percent of all Christmas tree-related house fires are caused by heat sources being too close to the tree.

Use an appropriate sized tree mount. An undersized mount could cause the tree to tip over and result in bodily injury or damage to furniture and other items.

And, of Course -- Holiday Shopping

The holiday season is also a criminal's favority time of the year. Home and vehicle burglaries, thefts and other crimes increase as unwitting shoppers haul around their newly purchased gifts from mall to car and car to house. Stay safe and protect your valuables with these tips:

Stay alert to your surroundings. Avoid dark or deserted places such as parking garages or alleys.

Shop with friends or family. There is safety in numbers -- and the more the merrier!

Carry your packages with you. Do not bring them to your vehicle then go back into the mall or store. If you must store them in your vehicle, place them in the trunk or out of view.

Keep a close eye on your purse or wallet. Packed stores and malls are heaven for pickpockets. Carry only the amount of cash you need. Use credit or debit cards if possible.

At home, keep all windows and doors locked. Keep curtains and blinds closed, making it more difficult for someone to see under your tree.

Make sure package delivery services do not leave packages on your doorstep when you are not home.

Avoid putting that huge box from your new 70" LCD HDTV on your curb for garbage pickup. That's a great way to advertise to thieves.

These few, simple tips can go a long way toward keeping you and yours safe this holiday season. We hope they will help you outlive your term life insurance and possibly even prevent an unannounced visit from your family's version of Clark's cousin Eddie!
