1B. A Life Insurance Review
Right now is always the best time to discuss with your mom any existing life insurance policies she has and her wishes for final expenses, estate distribution, etc. It may seem uncomfortable to broach the subject with her, but it’s a crucial discussion to have. Don’t wait until it’s too late! Taking this responsibility will show her you care about her enough to ensure her financial matters are in control and her final wishes are granted.
1A. A New Term Life Insurance Policy
Term life insurance is an important financial asset for any mom. It’s not just a good idea for women with a paying job outside the home. For example, a stay-at-home mom has many, many important jobs she performs every day. An unexpected death could result in a financial hardship for the surviving spouse and children. Salary.com’s Mom Salary Wizard is an excellent tool for determining the value of the many jobs moms perform and the annual salary they may get if they were paid for their at-home responsibilities. The wizard is also good for women who hold jobs outside the home.
For women with no outside income, most life insurance companies will issue a term life insurance policy of at least one-half the value of coverage in place on the working spouse. Some companies will even issue a policy up to the same amount of the working spouse’s coverage, with some limitations. Women who work outside the home can get term life insurance coverage in an amount that is based on their age and a multiple of their salary.
Have a wonderful Mother’s Day!
