We all know the basics for staying healthy. You need to eat well, exercise and get plenty of sleep. There are times, however, that making healthy choices can get tricky. Sometimes the things we do to benefit our health can be the same ones that hurt us in the long run. Below are some unexpected health choices that may be causing you more harm than good.

Skipping Calories

Many people count calories. This is a good thing as it means people are eating mindfully. The problems arise when people get in the habit of saving their calories for later on. For example, people may hold off on eating lunch so that they can have a few glasses of wine to unwind at the end of the day. People often believe this isn’t an issue if they aren’t exceeding their daily calorie allotment. This is incorrect. When you don’t eat breakfast or lunch your body goes into starvation mode, which means you are not burning calories as quickly and you may also find yourself overeating later on in the day. A smarter approach to eating would be to fill up on protein rich meals that’ll keep you satisfied all day. This way you won’t be tempted with calorie-rich and high-fat foods later on.

Hand Sanitizer

If you are a bit of a germaphobe and feel yourself reaching for the hand sanitizer any time you touch anything, you may want to rethink this. Recent research has shown that sanitizer containing triclosan may promote bacteria and virus resistance to antibiotic medications. Unless you’re in an especially germ-prone place like a hospital, soap and water should do the trick. When you’re not near a sink and hand sanitizer feels necessary, choose brands that contain at least 60% alcohol, which will kill 99% of bacteria on contact.

Bottled Water

You may think you’re doing your body a favor by avoiding tap water. Tap water could be filled with all sorts of things, and perhaps you think it a better choice to drink bottled. This is not the case. Bottled water contains no fluoride, and more and more adults suffer from a fluoride deficiency, which can lead to tooth decay. Save your teeth, your wallet and the environment and drink from the tap. If you are worried about water impurities, fill your glass with water purified by a water filtration system. This will keep your water free from impurities commonly found in tap water but still provide you with the benefits of fluoride.

Nutritional Supplements

When it comes to vitamins and minerals, more is better, right? Not always. People of tend to overdo it with supplements without understanding if they need them. Many foods are fortified these days, so the likelihood that you suffer from any significant nutritional deficiencies is slim. If you are already getting enough of what you need, the best case scenario is that the supplements will have no effect on you. But there can be some serious side effects of excess vitamins. Vitamin A in large amounts can be toxic to a developing fetus, vitamin C in large doses can cause gastrointestinal distress as well as interfere with glucose readings in people on diabetes medications, and vitamin B6 in high quantities can cause nerve damage. If you don’t have a deficiency, eating a balanced meal food should be the primary way that you fulfill nutritional requirements.

If you are guilty of any of the above health habits, you shouldn’t stress out about it too much. It means that you are health conscious and this is always a good start. Make some slight changes to your already healthy mindset, and you are on the right track for outliving your term life insurance policy!
