Ahh — September. The kids are back in school, the leaves are falling, and you can find pumpkin-flavored everything just about anywhere.  But did you know that it’s also Life Insurance Awareness Month? The month of September is dedicated to helping people make smart insurance decisions and helping them discover the benefits of protecting their loved ones with life insurance.

Awareness Month

No one likes to think about the death of a loved one. But the truth is no one wants that loved one’s family to suffer financially upon their death, either. This makes possible death a subject that needs to be addressed. Life Insurance Awareness Month offers an opportunity for families to ask the important financial questions. How financially secure would my family be? Would they have enough money to cover monthly bills? What about the mortgage? Would my children’s educational needs be met?

The Benefits

Life insurance can comfort those who feel plagued by the above questions. It can buy loved ones time to grieve. It can pay off debts and loans so that your survivors don’t have to. It can keep families in their homes and fund a child’s college education. Life insurance can do all of these important things for your family, should you no longer be there to do it for them. The catch is you need to own term life insurance.

The Underinsured

Research shows that 3 in 10 American households, or 35 million families, are uninsured. Along with families that aren’t covered, there are also many that are currently underinsured and would struggle in the event of a tragedy. In short, a majority of families either have no life insurance or not enough, leaving their family one accident or terminal illness away from a financial disaster.

Review Your Needs

As the month of September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, it is an important reminder to consider a family’s life insurance needs. Many people mistakenly feel that life insurance is a nonessential part of their financial plan, but, as previously stated, it offers mortgage protection, income replacement, final expenses and college funding options. If any of these benefits sound like they may be helpful, you probably need term life insurance.
