Take Short Walks and Live Longer

QuickQuote Term Life Insurance Blog

Looking for an easy way to extend your life? All you have to do is give your body fifteen minutes of physical activity a day, and you’ll win yourself three extra years of life.  A recent study found that just fifteen minutes of light daily activity, such as walking, makes you physically three years younger and cuts your chances of dying by 14 percent. Below are some ways to sneak more walking into your life and outlive your term life insurance policy.

Wear a Pedometer.

Extra walking each day is great exercise.  To help you track your progress, buy a pedometer, which will measure how much you walk. You can get them inexpensively at most drugstores and sporting goods stores. Record how far you walk each day by how many steps you take. As the number grows, you’ll see the difference these little changes can make in your daily exercise.

Take the Stairs.

Not all of your exercise needs to be done outdoors.  At least once a day, skip the elevator going up and take the stairs.  Even if you walk up only a few flights, you are adding some great movement to your day.

Listen to Music.

Listen to your favorite music while you work out. Research suggests it will help you stick with your regimen longer. You can also try talk radio, podcasts or books on CD. Anything that makes you enjoy yourself and forget about the fact that you are exercising. The less you’re thinking about it, the longer you’re likely to make your walk.

Find a Friend.

Having someone to talk to can make going on walks more enjoyable. It can also help make you more accountable. You’ll be less likely to skip a walk if you know someone is waiting for you. It also helps if you get a walk in if you feel unsafe or self-conscious walking alone. This will keep both you and your friend motivated to exercise.

Park Far

Every errand you run is an opportunity to get in more exercise.  When you get to the parking lot, park your car in the spot farthest from the entrance of the store. Walking across the lot will only add a few minutes to your trip, and it will you that much more exercise. Every little bit counts.

Walk and Talk

If you have some phone calls to take care of, then try having them while on the move.  Find a path near your home or office that isn’t too loud. When you make a phone, get to strolling.  If you can’t leave home for whatever reason, pace around while you chat. You’ll be surprised how much exercise you can get in when you’re paying attention to your phone call rather than the activity itself.

Even if you already exercise a couple of times a week, these tips can help keep you exercising a bit every day.  Just a little extra time each day spent walking will give you more energy and make you feel better and help you outlive your term life insurance policy.
