Unwanted Holiday Gifts = Cash for Term Life Insurance!

QuickQuote Term Life Insurance Blog

Are you the proud new owner of a holiday gift you weren’t entirely thrilled to receive? Or perhaps you got a great gift that just doesn’t fit quite right (darn holiday carbs!). If so, you’re not alone. Retail analysts estimate 12 to 20 percent of all Christmas gifts are exchanged or returned. That’s a HUGE number, considering the National Retail Federation estimates this year’s holiday sales to be around $585 billion! And returns will cost retailers and estimated 10 percent of their total holiday sales.

According to a 2011 MarketTools Study, clothing and shoes are the most commonly returned holiday gifts. Here’s a list of the top presents that typically don’t stay around long enough to see the New Year.

  • Apparel – 62%
  • Toys and Games – 16%
  • Kitchen and Bath Products – 13
  • Cosmetic and Beauty Products – 10%
  • Jewelry – 10%

So, how can you painlessly swap that beautiful holiday sweater your Great Aunt just knew you would love? Here are some tips.

1. Wait!

Don’t go the day after Christmas. This is by far the busiest return day of the year. You’ll spend most of it in the customer service line. It’s just one reason Wal-Mart has televisions in there — for your ‘enjoyment.’

2. A Gift Receipt is Your New Best Friend

Having one could save you time and money. In fact, some stores require them for exchanges and returns.

3. Beware of Gift Card Returns

Some stores won’t accept them, and others may withhold a service fee.

4. Bring the Tags

Hopefully, you didn’t throw these away or completely obliterate them with a Sharpie! Stores may need these to look up the item, especially if you do not have a gift receipt.

Now that you’ve returned all of your unwanted gifts, why not spend your newfound riches on something useful? Of course, we’re talking about term life insurance! Here’s what you can expect to pay for a new policy as we head into 2013.
