Quick Facts

  • Allstate offers term, whole, and universal life insurance, with several add-on options
  • Allstate doesn’t offer an online option for quotes, so you’ll need to speak with an agent if you are interested in prices
  • A.M. Best gives Allstate an A, the Better Business Bureau gives it an A+, and J.D. Power ranks it near the national average for customer satisfaction

If you want to protect your family’s financial future, life insurance is one of the best investments you can make. The most common types of insurance people buy are term and whole life, but there are plenty of options to fit your needs.

Allstate sold its life insurance to Blackstone Insurance Solutions in 2021. You can still buy Allstate life insurance; it’s merely sold through other providers. Since the product information listed below is no longer sold under the Allstate name, you won’t be eligible for a bundling discount if you buy it.

Allstate has an impressive list of life insurance products to meet any need. From short-term plans to permanent universal coverage, Allstate’s insurance plans offer fantastic coverage options.

If you’re in the market for coverage, you should read reviews of Allstate Life Insurance to see if it might work for you. Then, compare quotes from as many companies as you can by entering your ZIP code into our free tool.

What types of insurance does Allstate sell?

Allstate sells four main types of life insurance: term, whole, universal, and variable universal. It also sells several different riders you can purchase to customize your plan. The insurance that you buy depends on your needs.(For more information, read our “Does Allstate offer life insurance“).

Term life is a popular choice because it’s more affordable than whole life plans. Since term life only lasts a set period, it’s best for new parents, people with outstanding debt, new homeowners, and people getting close to retirement.

Whole life is more expensive, but it allows you to lock in a price for the rest of your life. You’ll never have to worry about your policy expiring or passing a medical exam later after health concerns have developed. It also accrues cash value that you can use when you need to.

Universal insurance is another type of permanent life insurance with additional cash value interest.

If you decide Allstate is right for you, you’ll have plenty of options. (For more information, read our “Allstate New York Life Insurance Coverage Review“).

Term Life Insurance From Allstate

Term life is typically easy to understand, and Allstate’s is no exception.

Allstate offers term life plans in shorter periods of 10 years, all the way up to 30 years. You can buy a term life plan as long as you are between 18 and 80 years old. Allstate’s term life is level, meaning your death benefit and monthly payments won’t change for the entirety of the policy.

You can choose to convert your term policy into permanent coverage before it expires.

Whole Life Insurance From Allstate

Allstate is one of the biggest insurance providers in the country, but it only offers one type of whole life insurance. However, there are plenty of add-ons that can help you customize your plan.

You can buy a whole life plan if you are between the ages of 18 and 80. You can also buy a whole life plan for minors from infancy to 18. Coverage starts at $10,000, and you have several options for a payment plan.

  • To age 121 (cheapest)
  • To age 70
  • 20-pay
  • 10-pay
  • Single pay

Each of these options gives you control over how you pay your insurance bill. For example, if you select 20-pay, your monthly bill will be split so that you pay for the entire policy in 20 years. Like term life, Allstate’s whole life has level payments.

Unlike term, whole life accrues cash value. You can borrow against that cash value for things like a down payment on a house or financial emergencies.

Universal and Variable Universal Life Insurance From Allstate

Universal life insurance can be tricky to understand, but it’s a permanent life insurance plan at its heart.

Allstate’s universal coverage starts at $50,000, while variable universal begins at $100,000. Both policies are available for ages 0 to 80. Like whole life, your death benefit and cash accumulation are tax-free.

One of the advantages of universal life is that your payments are flexible. If you put more money into your plan than the minimum payment calls for, you’ll earn more interest on your cash value.

The main difference between universal and variable universal is how they accrue value. The standard universal plan allows the owner to link the cash value to the performance of stock market index funds. However, you can only win or lose so much — both gains and losses are capped.

You can also adjust the death benefit to meet your financial needs as they change. You just need to make sure you pay enough each month.

Variable universal offers more choices for the owner. You can choose from multiple sub-accounts to invest your cash value in. There’s higher growth potential with variable universal, but more risk as well. Your policy won’t limit how much you can earn or lose.

Allstate Insurance Reviews

Allstate has a reputation for solid customer service, affordable rates, and a massive list of coverage options. However, the true test of a company is its reviews.

Allstate gets great ratings from professional rating companies. For example, A.M. Best rates Allstate’s financial security as an A+ (superior). The Better Business Bureau lists Allstate as an A+, but thousands of complaints are listed on the site.

Customer reviews are mixed. Some customers love Allstate for its service, rates, and ease of access. Customers appreciate that they can access their accounts with a simple Allstate life insurance login.

However, there are many angry customers who write reviews about Allstate. Customers claim that Allstate lags on paying for add-ons that allow you to access your benefit if you become chronically ill.

Customers aren’t thrilled about Allstate’s lack of online options for getting quotes. However, they do enjoy the fact that most other aspects of their life insurance can be accessed online.

To get a quote, you can speak with an agent by phone or visit any Allstate address to get more information directly.

Is Allstate a good insurance company?

Is Allstate a good insurance company? As one of the biggest providers in the country, Allstate is a good insurance company for many reasons. A.M. Best ranks its financial stability as superior, and the Better Business Bureau gives it an A+. However, Allstate is plagued with customers who are unsatisfied with high rates and poor claims resolution.

Allstate is one of the most famous insurance companies in the country, and millions of Americans trust them for their coverage needs.

While auto insurance is their most famous product, Allstate offers much more than that. As its name suggests, Allstate agents are located in almost every corner of the country.

As a bonus, you can get most of your insurance needs covered by Allstate. With car, home, renters, and many other types of insurance, Allstate is a one-stop shop.

Is Allstate a good insurance company?

Founded in 1931, Allstate has become one of the largest insurance companies in America by offering a wide range of services. Auto insurance is the area in which Allstate shines. With a long list of coverage options, policy add-ons, and discounts, there’s something for almost everyone.

However, Allstate excels with other insurance products as well. With approximately 16 million customers, Allstate maintains a substantial portion of the insurance market.

However, those 16 million customers aren’t all happy with the product they purchase. With higher rates than competitors, unsatisfying customer service experiences, and a difficult claims process, Allstate doesn’t have the best reputation.

How is Allstate insurance rated?

Professional reviewing companies tend to speak well of Allstate.

A.M. Best rates Allstate an A+, indicating that they have superior financial strength. What does that mean for customers? A superior financial rating means that you don’t need to worry about your claims being paid.

J.D. Power rates insurance companies by overall satisfaction and notes that Allstate performs slightly above the national average. Allstate ranks 10 out of 21 companies for homeowners insurance, while it consistently scores below average for car insurance satisfaction.

Finally, the Better Business Bureau gives Allstate an A+ rating, although they have numerous customer complaints on the site.

Unfortunately, Allstate has a multitude of unhappy customers. The chief complaints are that rates are much higher than competitors and that Allstate is hesitant to pay out claims.

How is Allstate’s car insurance?

You can purchase the traditional types of insurance through Allstate: liability, comprehensive, and collision. They also offer a wide range of additional coverage choices that you can add to your plan:

  • Safe driving reward – This special bonus program rewards you money back for every six months that you remain accident-free.
  • Roadside assistance – If you find yourself stranded on the side of the road, this add-on will help you get moving again. From jumpstarts to tows, roadside assistance covers it all.
  • Accident forgiveness – It’s a fact of life — accidents happen. If you’re worried about an accident in the future, you can purchase this add-on to eliminate your first accident from your insurance record.
  • New car replacement – Totaling a car is never fun, but it’s especially painful when you’ve just bought a new vehicle. However, you can purchase protection to replace your new car if you total it during the first two years of its life.
  • Deductible rewards – Allstate wants to reward you for good driving. For every year you go without driving violations, they’ll reduce your deductible by $100 without changing your rates. Your deductible can decrease by up to $500.
  • Custom equipment – If you buy aftermarket parts for your car, standard insurance won’t cover them. This add-on will replace your parts if they are damaged or stolen.

Allstate also offers rideshare insurance for drivers who work for companies like Uber. If you use your vehicle for business purposes, you usually need to obtain a commercial plan for your vehicle. However, the growing popularity of rideshare services is prompting insurance providers to create more affordable alternatives.

Ride for Hire coverage from Allstate is an excellent alternative to purchasing a complete commercial auto insurance plan. Rather than purchasing a separate policy, you can add rideshare coverage to an existing car insurance policy.

Allstate’s Ride for Hire isn’t available in every state, so check with an agent if you want to sign up.

Allstate Auto Insurance Discounts

Like most other insurance companies, Allstate offers several discounts — including the following — to help you save money:

  • Bundling
  • Anti-lock brakes
  • New car
  • Good driver
  • Good student
  • Anti-theft device
  • Early signing (at least seven days before your policy goes into effect)
  • Paid-in-full
  • Paperless bills
  • Automatic payments

Most of these discounts combine with the others, allowing you to save a lot of money. Ask an Allstate agent to check the amount of discounts for which you’re eligible.

Is Allstate a good home insurance company?

Despite being known for car insurance, Allstate’s home insurance receives higher customer reviews.

Allstate offers all the usual standard home insurance options and a few specialized add-ons:

  • Dwelling – This part of your insurance covers the actual structure of your home, including your roof. It covers damage from weather, fire, theft, and vandalism. Protection extends to other structures on your property, like freestanding garages, pools, and fences.
  • Earthquake – Since earthquakes aren’t a high risk for every area in the country, it’s not included in the standard plan. However, if you live in an earthquake-prone area, this coverage is a good idea. Check with your Allstate agent to determine if earthquake insurance is available in your area.
  • Flood – Similar to earthquake insurance, flood coverage isn’t included in a standard plan. If your home is located in a flood zone, you can save yourself thousands of dollars in repair costs by choosing this add-on.
  • Liability – If a guest is injured on your property and the injury is deemed your fault, you can be sued. In that instance, liability protection helps compensate you for legal bills. You can select the standard amount of liability, or you might be able to purchase additional coverage.
  • Personal umbrella – If you’re concerned about the amount of liability coverage you have, umbrella coverage can help. Umbrella insurance takes over once you’ve reached the liability coverage limit.
  • Guest medical – While liability covers your legal fees, guest medical insurance will help pay for the injured person’s medical expenses. From dental work to emergency room visits, Allstate will cover it all.
  • Personal property – This coverage protects the things you own, like electronics, appliances, furniture, and clothing. If your home contains valuable possessions, such as antiques, jewelry, or musical instruments, you should consider buying more coverage.
  • Scheduled personal property – If you have items in your home that are worth a considerable amount of money, you can purchase additional coverage for them after they’ve been appraised.
  • Sports equipment and musical instruments – As high-priced items, you can purchase coverage for equipment that you or your family uses for sports or music.

Allstate also offers coverage for business items, like landscaping, green improvements, and identity theft. It’s also the first major insurance provider to offer insurance if you share your home.

HostAdvantage is an add-on for people who rent their home through sites like Airbnb. This coverage takes effect whenever a temporary renter is in your home and protects you against theft and damage.
