Working for the government, whether at the federal or state level, has its pluses and minuses. One of the big pluses is life insurance.

There are many different organizations that offer life insurance for government employees. These organizations offer affordable government employee life insurance that will keep you and your family covered.

What is covered by government life insurance?

When it comes to the federal government, the FEGLI offers a standard basic life insurance plan to all employees. The program offers one of the many types of term life insurance along with the ability to add optional coverages as well.

For basic insurance, you would pay 2/3 of the amount with the government picking up the rest. The only government agency where this is different is the U.S. Postal Service, which covers the whole cost for basic coverage for its workers.

Full-time and part-time federal employees are eligible to enroll but seasonal and temporary employees are not.

The FEGLI offers several optional add-ons that can supplement your basic life insurance. All of them have the added bonus of being reasonably priced. The add-ons, which cover multiple scenarios, including for your family, range in rates and your age affects the cost.

Some add-ons, if you are in your 20s or 30s, can be as low as just 5 cents a month. For employees in their 70s or 80s, the cost rises to up to $15 a month, which is still reasonable.

Other Life Insurance Providers for Government Employees

While the FEGLI is the largest provider of government life insurance, it is not the only one. There is also the Worldwide Assurance for Employees of Public Agencies (WAEPA).

One of the biggest differences between the two groups is that the WAEPA offers life insurance for government employees even after they’ve left federal service. As long as you keep paying the premium you can remain enrolled in the program.

To stay covered by the FEGLI you must have been in the program for five straight years before retirement. There is no qualifier like that with the WAEPA.

If you enrolled in the WAEPA you can qualify for as much as $1.5 million in the program’s group term life insurance policy.

Life Insurance for State Government Employees

If you work for a state government you are also eligible for life insurance coverage. For example, in Illinois, there are basic and optional life insurance plans offered. There are also plans for retirees as well.

Each state will have its own life insurance program for employees so make sure to do your research after getting a government job.
